Abdullina L.R., Brisart Michael J.M. Frame modeling of the image of Russia in French media discourse

Abstract. The article is devoted to formation of media-linguistics, whose focus of research is the media discourse, in Russian and foreign science. It highlights the method of frame modeling widely used in media linguistics. It focuses on the notion of frame-script, describes its structure of key topical subframes consisting of slots. The necessity of applying this method in the description of Russia’s image representation in French newspaper discourse is justified. The comparative analysis of models of the frame-script "Russia" is carried out for two different time intervals. The subframes “Politique russe”, “l’UE”, “Gouvernement russe” and “l'Ukraine” are set as dominant for both periods. In subframes there were selected slots illustrated by examples of verbalization in newspaper discourse. Prevalence of some slots and the presence of others to a lesser extent are explained. It is concluded that the representation of Russia’s image in French newspaper texts varies depending on the events happening inside the country and in the international arena. The study of a country’s image in a foreign discourse cannot be considered as universal for foreign-language media picture of the world and is objective only in relation to a given period.

Key words: media discourse, media text, newspaper discourse, newspaper discourse, slot, Russia.

Sakaeva L.R., Khusnutdinov K.R. Peculiarities of translating terms of nanotechnology discourse

Abstract. Nanotechnology is a relatively new, developing discipline. As it develops, new terms are created, and technical translators are faced with the task of creating corresponding new terms in the target language. The emergence of new terms in the new field requires their standardisation. Standards are still being developed and revised, and a comprehensive study of terminology of a relatively new branch of science should contribute to the formation of a universal technical language. The article deals with the peculiarities of translating nanotechnology discourse terms from English into Russian (based on GOSTs). The analysis revealed the most frequent translation method is loan translation. It was used to translate 58% of the terms. Less common are transformations, which were used to translate 17% of the terms, equivalent terms selection – 13% of terms, descriptive translation – 6% of terms, transliteration and transcription – 6% of terms. After comparing the results of the study with the works of other authors over the past five years, it was concluded that there was no consensus on the frequency of using one or another translation method in nanotechnology discourse and that further research in this field is needed.

Abstract. This article presents a review and comparison of the two-volume Chinese-Russian dictionary of a member of the Beijing Spiritual Mission, Archimandrite Palladius (Kafarov) and the Chinese-English dictionary of the representative of the British Protestant Mission Frederick William Baller. These dictionaries are examples of the work of representatives of Christian missions (Orthodox and Protestant) who served in China and studied Chinese. The relevance of the study is determined by the fact that dictionaries that were previously not considered together, published by different spiritual missions in approximately one period, were taken for comparison. This study was conducted to identify the main features of the similarities and differences in the approaches of missionaries to compiling dictionaries and learning Chinese. To achieve the goals set in the article, the method of content analysis, the method of external and internal analysis of sources were used. Based on the results of the study, the following conclusions were made. The missionary dictionaries compiled at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries have similar and different features, which indicates the difference in the scientific approaches of the missionaries who represent the different Christian missions that existed in China during the specified time period.
